In the News: Jaishankar on 'India's Foreign Policy and Election'

Dhruva Jaishankar, Executive Director, Observer Research Foundation America, was quoted in an article titled “For Modi, the Indian election is less about winning and more about by how much” by Gabriel Dominguez of The Japan Times:

Should Modi win, analysts such as Dhruva Jaishankar from the Observer Research Foundation America expect his future administration to continue strengthening economic and security ties with both Washington and Tokyo, with the main challenge being finding ways to boost trade and business-to-business ties between India and Japan.

As for Sino-Indian ties, Jaishankar said that the “ball is in Beijing’s court,” arguing that over the past decade China has pursued a set of security, economic and diplomatic policies “that run directly contrary to Indian interests.”

“As long as that continues, almost any Indian government will have little choice but to take countermeasures rather than work toward closer relations with Beijing.”
