India-Canada relations have plummeted to an unprecedented low, with both nations recalling diplomats. The heart of the dispute lies in Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s public accusation that the Indian government was involved in the assassination of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soil. Questions have now emerged about whether Canada’s actions reflect a genuine concern for justice or if domestic political compulsions are influencing Trudeau’s stance.
The open allegation against the Indian government is an extraordinary step, as few nations risk bilateral relations over singular incidents. This raises the question: why would Canada cross such a significant diplomatic line, straining relations with India at a time when global cooperation is more critical than ever?
