Dr. Anit Mukherjee is a Senior Fellow at the ORF America where he leads the program on global economics and development policy. His work focuses on the governance of the emerging digital economy, including the use of technology to accelerate financial inclusion and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). His research interests also include financing of digital public infrastructure, the reform of multilateral development assistance and expanding social protection systems. Presently, he is collaborating with technology pioneers to create and expand open networks for e-commerce and digital payments, and exploring new frameworks to finance climate change mitigation and adaptation in developing countries.
Prior to joining ORF America, from 2013-2021, Dr. Mukherjee was a Policy Fellow at the Center for Global Development where he authored several papers and monographs on the development impact of biometric ID systems, digital financial services and global standards for verifiable COVID-19 vaccination certificates. Previously, from 2004-2012, he was an Associate Professor at the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy specializing in public expenditure management and financing of education, health and social protection.
Dr. Mukherjee graduated in economics and politics from Presidency University, Kolkata, completed his M.A. in Economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, and holds a PhD in Policy and Planning Sciences from the University of Tsukuba, Japan. His academic work has been published in leading journals such as Nature, Conservation Letters, Agricultural Economics and Journal of Asian Economics. He is the co-author of Social Sector in a Decentralized Economy: India in the Era of Globalization published by Cambridge University Press in 2016 and has contributed papers in several edited volumes on economic growth and development. Originally from India, Dr. Mukherjee has lived and worked in Japan, Brazil, Yemen and Sri Lanka. He is an avid traveler and speaks seven languages.
